Why a “Digital Guidebook”?

Our “Digital Guidebooks” come in either DVD-ROM format or are downloadable over the internet. Our Digital Guidebooks offer many advantages over their paper counterparts in that they are interactive, dynamic, visually rich, and can be updated. For use away from a computer, custom trip plans and maps can be printed to paper or downloaded to a mobile device, removing the need to carry bulky guidebooks or maps with you!

Our Digital Guidebook Titles

To see our current list of Digital Guidebook titles click here. The activities we cover include hiking, camping, cycling, skiing, kayaking, golfing and boating. Each of our titles focuses on a particular region that is considered an exceptional destination for one or more of these activities. There will also be a number of other titles focused on mainstream tourist destinations. Primarily, our digital guidebooks serve as planning aides. However, we have also found that their unparalleled photographic content has made them attractive souvenirs for some of our customers.

What is included in our Digital Guidebooks?

The DVD-ROM or download will install directly onto your PC or Mac hard-drive. The user interface presents itself as three main resizable windows: a zoomable map window, a zoomable photo widow and a route description window. Hotspots in the map window have associated pop-ups and are navigable. The photo window shows the view at your current hotspot location and can contain standard shots or full 360-degree panoramas. The direction you are facing in the photo window is depicted with a mini compass. The route description window describes your current location and the route to the next point. Changing your direction of travel will change this description also! Using all these features you are able to explore and learn about the area as if you were actually there!

At some point, you will want to decide on a particular route, and take the details out with you. The DVD-ROM will allow you to define a start point, intermediate points and end point (which could be the same as the start point), and will then automatically create a trip plan for you. Included in the trip plan is an elevation profile, GPS coordinates, step by step route instructions, all the maps sheets needed and a selection of photos which are totally definable by you. Click here to see an example of a trip plan. The trip plan is generated in pdf form and so can be printed or uploaded to an electronic mobile device. In addition to this, GPS waypoints and track data for your tip are generated, and these can be uploaded to your GPS unit. Maps can also be printed straight as seen in the map window.
